Becoming a school governor is one of the most important ways in which you can help your local school. Joining a governing body is an increasingly important step to take because in serving the school through the governing body you are serving the community and many governors find this a rewarding experience. If you are interested in becoming a governor you do not need any formal qualifications, but you need to have an interest in education, have commitment, and be able to devote your time.
Have you thought about becoming a school governor?
If you were to become a school governor you would, depending on the size of the school, be one of a small group of people making up the governing body. The Local Education Authority gives advice, support and training in carrying out the role.
The term of office for a school governor is normally four years and you would be expected to attend at least one meeting per term, usually in the evening. School governors are responsible for making sure the school provides a quality education. Together with the Head Teacher, who is responsible for day-to-day management, they set the school's aims and policies as well as carrying out a number of important duties.
